Hendrik van Heessel (†1470), the author of this manuscript, was a herald in the service of several German emperors and also of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy and founder of the Order of the Golden Fleece. In this collection, Hendrik took notes in Latin, German and Middle Dutch. The most remarkable part are the 24 portraits of the counts of Holland, from the 10th century to Jacoba of Bavaria, who resigned in 1428. The pen drawings are the oldest known images of these noblemen. They were probably made in the summer of 1456 at the Haagse Binnenhof. The source of inspiration was probably the now lost wooden grave statues that stood there.
