The Haynes Pioneer automobile was built in 1894 by Elwood Haynes in Kokomo. It is a early gasoline powered car, with a Sintz engine, and built at the Riverside Machine Shop owned by Elmer and Edgar Apperson. The car was completed in July, 1894, absolving its first test drive on the Fourth of July. The vehicle was prepared to participate at the Chicago Times-Herald contest scheduled for November 2, 1895. By then, it was not running well, and when the race was postponed until November, 28, Haynes chose to contend with his second, improved car. It did not start, however, due to an accident that happened on the way to the starting line.

The Haynes Pioneer is not the first automobile built in the USA nor was it made in 1893 (both as claimed by Haynes himself and his company, but nevertheless incorrect), or even earlier.

Elwood Haynes donated the car to the Smithsonianin 1910. It is presently on display in the National Museum of American History collection, America on the Move.
