Guercino - Triumph of the Baroque
The Guercino - Triumph of the Baroque was a temporary exhibition of the artist's masterpieces from Cento, Rome and Polish collections in the National Museum in Warsaw. 80 works, including 33 paintings by Guercino - from early works, full of inventiveness, temperament, to the late, mature, characterized by raw naturalism, in line with classical tendencies were displayed from 20 September 2013 to 2 February 2014. The exhibiton included paintings from the Pinacoteca and churches and palaces of Cento as well as one of the most intriguing and enigmatic works in the history of modern painting, rarely presented outside of Rome, the Arcadian Shepherds (Et in Arcadia ego) from the Barberini collection evoking a dramatic dissonance between the beauty of nature and human suffering, and a monumental Crucifixion with St. Elizabeth of Hungary and St. Frances of Rome, the altar painting from the Potocki Chapel in the Wawel Cathedral with refined contrast of light and shadow. A wide range of interests and versatility of the artist's workshop and the importance for the history of art was reflected in presentation of more than 50 drawing studies, sketches and engravings after Guercino. Retrospective exhibition at the National Museum in Warsaw was the first in Europe so rich presentation of work by Italian artist outside of his home country.
