English: The ruins of the Great Stone Church in Mission San Juan Capistrano in San Juan Capistrano, Orange County, California are of a sandstone church begun in 1797 and completed in 1806. The stone used was quarried from gullies and creek beds up to 6 miles (9.7 km) away, and were held together by mortar made from crushed limestone. A 7.5 magnitude earthquake in 1812 destroyed the church. An attempt to rebuild it in 1815 failed.
