English: Great Dismal Swamp maroons — freed and/or escaped fugitive enslaved African Americans, who lived in the Great Dismal Swamp marshlands, located in Virginia and North Carolina.
- Research indicates that thousands lived there between c. 1700 and the 1860s, although conditions were harsh.
- Harriett Beecher Stowe wrote about the Maroons people in her 1856 novel, Dred: A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp.
