Giuseppe Lorenzo Formosa (Birgu, 1842 - Sliema 1923), Maltese photographer;

  • Married Violante Tagliaferro in 1866; father of painter Thomas B. Formosa (1874-1939) and artist Benjamin J. Formosa (1885-1976). [1]; [2]
  • Margaret Harker in her book 'Photographers of Malta' writes that Giuseppe Lorenzo Formosa started as a gifted assistant to Leandro Preziosi in the 1860s and as a gifted photographer. In 1863 he was awarded a prize at the Esposizione d'industria. In 1869 and 1872 he was awarded two other. By then he had left Preziosi to set up his own business in c.1876 at 66 Strada Forni, Valletta. by c.1873 he was in photographic practice at 86, Strada Teatro, Valletta. He also exhibited ten photographs in the Malta Court of the London Exhibition.
  • "Giuseppe Lorenzo Formosa, a pupil of Preziosi, of Old Theatre Street (hint to lure British customers: “near the Protestant church of St Paul”) also took portraits in any kind of weather, only from 10am to 3pm. Formosa offered his clients the “instantaneous process” too, but at prices to be agreed on beforehand. He gives the following table of fixed prices for portraits: [3]
  1. Cartes de visite size – first six copies, six shillings; first 12 copies, nine shillings;
  2. Victoria or Margherita size – first copy, four shillings; each following copy, eight pence;
  3. Cabinet size – first copy, nine shillings; each following copy, one shilling;
  4. Promenade size – first copy, seven shillings; each following copy, one shilling, six pence;
  5. Salon size – first copy, 10 shillings; each following copy, one shilling, six pence;
  6. Whole plate size – first copy, one pound; each following copy, four shillings."
