Made by E. Wolfe & Co., it was purchased from Garrard & Co. by a committee organised by Lady Eve Greville and presented as a gift "from the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" to Princess Mary of Teck in 1893 on the occasion of her marriage to the Duke of York, later George V. It includes two frames, one to wear it as a tiara and the other a smaller one to make a coronet. It can also be worn as a necklace. In 1914, Mary adapted the tiara to take 13 diamonds (from the dismantled Surrey Tiara, another of her wedding gifts) in place of the large oriental pearls (which are incorporated into the Cambridge Lover's Knot tiara) surmounting the tiara; also, the removed base is adapted to be worn as a bandeau. In 1947, Queen Mary gave the tiara to her granddaughter, Princess Elizabeth, as a wedding present. She reportedly called it "Granny's tiara." Elizabeth had the (bandeau) base reattached in 1969.
