The statue of George Washington in Union Square, Manhattan, New York City was sculpted by Henry Kirke Brown and the pedestal designed by architect Richard Upjohn. It was cast in 1856, and dedicated on July 4 of that year. The historic moment depicted is Evacuation Day, November 25, 1783, when the British left the city and General Washington triumphantly led his troops back into the city. The statue originally stood in the middle of the street off the southeast corner of the park, but was moved into the park in 1930. The statue was renovated and restored in 1989.
