This statue of a heavily-pregnant African woman, created in 1931 by Jacob Epstein caused a furore on its first display. Critics felt the characterisation too coarse, ignoring the fact that women in the late stages of pregnancy do tend to be somewhat ungainly. Normally on display at the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, it was lent to the Bluecoat in 2017 for a temporary showing.
