Freedom of Speech was published in the February 20, 1943, issue of The Saturday Evening Post with a matching essay by Booth Tarkington, as the first in the magazine's "Four Freedoms" series. The painting also appears on a 1943 poster promoting the purchase of war bonds, created by the Office of War Information.
