Akademický sochár František Gibala narodil sa 5. apríla 1912 Krajnej Poľane, okr. Svidník †– 8. 9. 1987 Bratislava. Gibala študoval v rokoch 1928-33 na štátnych kameňosoch, škole v Hořiciach, 1933-37 na Akadémii výtvarných umení v Prahe.

V roku 1940 sa udsadil v Bratislave. V počiatočnom období tvorby sochár stvárňoval emotívne žánrové motívy, od 40. rokov 20. storočia sa prikláňal ku klasicizujúcej rovnováhe a prirodzenej vecnosti.

Gibalovu medzivojnovú tvorbu charakterizujú predovšetkým záujem o portrét (Rapavý cigán, 1936), portrétoval známe osobnosti umenia ako napríklad Ľ. Fullu, M. Rázusa, 1943. Popri komornej plastike sa venoval aj tvorbe pomníkov a pamätníkov i monumentálnej tvorbe pre architektúru napríklad sochárska výzdoba priečelia Štátnej banky v Prešove v rokoch 1941-42.

Pracoval aj na cirkevných objednávkach sochy a reliéfy v interiéri farského kostola Sedembolestnej Panny Márie v Poprade v rokoch 1939-42. V 50. a 60. rokoch sa priklonil k socialistickému realizmu a vytvoril množstvo pamätníkov oslavného charakteru, tematicky sa viažucich na obdobie 2. svetovej vojny (Útek z horiacej obce, Zlatá Baňa) 1953, pomníkov a sochárskych diel pre architektúru.
