Attributed arms of w:John fitz Richard (died 1190), Hereditary Constable of Chester, feudal baron of Halton, son of Richard fitz Eustace: Quarterly or and gules overall bend sable a label of five points argent for difference[2]
A differenced version of these arms was later granted by the Constables of Chester (or the Earls of Chester) to their dispensator, who founded the prominent noble family of Despencer.[3] w:Richard fitz Eustace married Albreda de Lissours, daughter of Robert de Lissours by his wife Albreda de Lacy, daughter and heiress of Robert de Lacy, Baron of Pontefract. His grandson was Roger de Lacy (1170–1211), Baron of Pontefract, Constable of Chester, known in his youth as "Roger fitz John", who upon inheriting the titles of his paternal grandmother adopted the surname of de Lacy. His son John de Lacy, jure uxoris 2nd Earl of Lincoln (c. 1192-1240), Constable of Chester, baron of Halton, adopted new arms of Or, a lion rampant purpure ("de Lacy").
