23 September 1921: established as Combat Squadron 4;
1 July 1922: redesignated VF-2;
19 March 1923: redesignated VF- 2B;
1 January 1927: redesignated VF-6B;
1 July 1927: redesignated VF-6;
1 July 1928: redesignated VB-2B;
1 July 1930: redesignated VF-6B;
1 July 1937: redesignated VF-3;
15 July 1943: redesignated VF-6 (Note: VF-3 a nd VF-6 exchanged designations on the same day);
29 October 1945: disestablished (or 1 October 1945).
