Federal was an American Neoclassical decorative arts style that began in the 1780s and lasted into the 1820s. It looked to Ancient Greece for inspiration, rather than Great Britain, and often incorporated patriotic symbols such as eagles. Its simplified lines were closely related to those of the Directoire style in France.

It was followed by the American Empire style of the 1810s to 1840s, which took its inspiration from France's ornate Empire style.
