The English pattern of playing cards dates back to at least the early 16th century, the first cards being imported from Rouen, France, and also from Antwerp. Cards were single-headed until around 1860, when double-headed cards first appeared.[1]

The cards are also known as the International or Anglo-American pattern, but the International Playing-Card Society recommend the designation 'English pattern'.[1]
