Electronic safety earmuffs differ versus 'classic'/passive earmuffs in that there is an electronic component that amplifies certain sounds (human voices), but still shuts off noises or impact noises above 80 dB. Also, this type of ear muff still will perform the passive attenuation when the battery is exhausted or the power component is absent. This is in contrast to electronic-based noise-cancelling headphones or headsets, that only rely on the electronics to cancel out the noise.

Sometimes these type of earmuffs also have an auxiliary input for personal audio devices like smartphones or digital personal audio players, or will have an built-in FM or DAB+ radio.
