The large island near the village of Durankulak is a prehistoric settlement mound with enormous international popularity. The island is a cultural monument of national importance. It is one of the most famous prehistoric sites in Bulgaria and as such enjoys great scientific and tourist interest. The archaeological complex near Durankulak was discovered in 1974 by Henrietta Todorova. Intensive archaeological research began in 1974-1975. With sporadic interruptions, they continue to this day. The world-renowned Bulgarian archaeologist Prof. Henrietta Todorova has been the long-time leader of the research. After her death in 2015, the rehearsals were led by Ivan Vaisov and Vladimir Slavchev.
