Duesenberg SJ is a designation given to Duesenberg Model J with a Roots supercharger that boosted power from 265 to 320 bhp. While such items were, in fact, offered as an option for new Duesenberg J after 1932, SJ was not an official Duesenberg model name. The manufacturer instead preferred calling such cars "Supercharged J", and offered them also as a retrofit for customers. Conversion was done either at Duesenberg or at a Duesenberg service station.

Attributed to th "SJ" is inevitably the presence of four flexible exhaust hoses, protuding from the right side of the engine bay, and leading through four holes in the right front fender and into the muffler. Again, general public opinion is not correct. While all Supercharged J have a visible exhaust, not all have flexible hoses. On some early models, a cast metal part was used instead, and a customer could opt for functional hoses in his exhaust system even his car had no supercharger. This item was also available as a retrofit.
