English: A remarkable crest on a horse's neck often consists mostly of fat, and indicates obesity or otherwise abnormal metabolism. A neck at neutral position having an arch denotes a cresty neck, as there are no muscles above the nuchal ligament. Crestiness of the neck is relative--mature stallions and draught breeds will naturally tend to have larger crests at healthy body mass than mares, geldings, youngstock, and lighter breeds. The same size of crest will look larger on a short neck and smaller on a long one. Often confused with the natural arch that occurs when a horse elevates its neck from the base.
