The Corryvreckan whirlpool is a rare tidal phenomenon occuring twice a day in the Gulf of Corryvreckan due to the topography of the bottom. The sloping bottom contains channels down which the tidal waters drain, so to speak, as in the drain of a tub, with the same whirling effect. The whirlpool is located on the southern coast of Scarba, western side.
