The contemporary kilts category consists of images of modern-day, non-traditional kilts, or of people wearing them. These are skirt-like, unbifurcated garments designed as lower body clothing for, or marketed to, men. They are modeled after the traditional Scottish kilt, but with some significant differences both in design and construction as well as in fabrics. They can be made out of a variety of different fabrics, including canvas, leather, and polyester. In addition, they do not necessarily exhibit the clan tartan patterns of the traditional kilts, and are sometimes of plain color.

Some of these kilts have been deemed as acceptable attire for officialy sanctioned Highland Games competitions, though often their acceptance is restricted to the lower grades of competitors, or beginners. They are often used by Highland athletes because of their relative economy and their toughness and durability.
