Basic arms & blazon[edit]

First adopted by w:Bernhard, Count of Anhalt, Duke of Saxony (c.1140-1212), a member of the House of Ascania, Count of Anhalt and Ballenstedt, and Lord of Bernburg through his paternal inheritance. From 1180 he was Duke of Saxony (as Bernhard III or Bernhard I), the first of the House of Ascania (which was seated at Askanien Castle, the caput of the County of Ascania) to hold that title. The new Duke of Saxony of the House of Ascania replaced the Saxon horse emblem () and introduced his own arms () (sometimes referred to as "Ballenstedt", from the family's original seat at Ballenstedt Castle) to which he added a bendwise crancelin, symbolising the Saxon ducal crown, as the new coat-of-arms of Saxony (). The later rulers of the House of Wettin adopted this Ascanian coat-of-arms. See w:Coat of arms of Saxony
