In about 1225 the w:County of Sponheim was divided in two, with each part ruled by a different branch of the w:House of Sponheim. The Sponheim-Starkenburg line ruled over the Upper, Hither, or Farther County of Sponheim (Hintere Grafschaft Sponheim), seated at Starkenburg, and the Sponheim-Kreuznach line ruled over the Lower, Anterior, or Fore County of Sponheim (Vordere Grafschaft Sponheim), seated at w:Kreuznach
