In 1865 the regent of Demak, R.M.A. Candranegara, published what appears to have been the first substantial modern travelogue in Javanese under the title Cariyos Bab Lampah-Lampahipun Raden Mas Arya Purwa Lelana (Account of the Travels of Raden Mas Arya Purwa Lelana). This was followed in 1867 by Cariyos Negari Betawi (Description of Batavia) by R.A. Sastradarma, Purwa Carita Bali (Narrative Account of Bali, 1875) by R. Sasrawijaya, Cariyos Nagari Welandi (Account of a Journey to the Netherlands, 1876) by Abdoellah ibnoe Sabar bin Arkebah, Cariyos Negari Padhang (Description of West Sumatra, 1876) by R.A. Darmabrata, and Cariyos Saradhadhu Jawi (Travels of a Javanese Soldier, 1877) by an anonymous author. Later travelogues included Cariyos Tanah Pareden Diyeng (Journey to the Dieng Plateau, 1911) by Prawirasudirja, Serat Cariyos Kekesahan Saking Tanah Jawi Dhateng Nagari Walandi (Account of a Journey from Java to the Netherlands, 1916) by R.M.A. Suryasuparta, Cariyosipun Banawi Sala (Account of the Solo River, 1916) by R.A.A. Reksakusuma, Kesah Lelayaran Dhateng Pulo Papuwah (Narrative of a Voyage to the Island of Papua, 1919) by Yitnasastra, Kekesahan Dhateng Riyo (Journey to Riau, 1921) by R. Sasrasuganda, Bali Sacleretan (Short Trip to Bali, 1925) by Ekajaya, and others.
