- Buddhist lay renunciants — Buddhist people who have taken up a form of Buddhist renunciation, but have not taken the full set of precepts for Buddhist monasticism as monks or nuns.
- These would include mae ji of Thailand, thilashin of Burma, dasa sil mata of Sri Lanka, and other similar Buddhist positions.
- Often these institutions are employed when the local Buddhist tradition does not accept full ordination of women as female Buddhist monastics (bhikkhuni or bhiksuni).
