English: British American Oil ("BA") was established in Canada in 1906. It was incorporated under the authority of King Edward VII, and was therefore in a sense a British company, while American petroleum products were the standards by which the rest the world was measured at that time. So it took the name "British American" - a British Company, with American standards, in Canada. Gulf Oil gained control of BA in 1956, and the BA banner was replaced with the Gulf logo on Canadian service stations in the late 1960s (Gulf itself disappeared from Canadian service stations in 1985 when its Canadian retail operations were purchased by Petro Canada).
