Brass and tortoise shell marquetry, in use in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, invented by the cabinetmaker Pierre Gole and named after his pupil and son-in-law, the cabinet and furniture maker André-Charles Boulle (French, 1642-1732), whose work was widely imitated.
