English: The double-sided Citgo sign in Kenmore Square, Boston, Massachusetts, was erected in 1965, replacing one which was built in 1940. Originally, there was a Cities Service (Citgo) gas station at street level, but it is no longer there. When Citgo attempted to dismantle the sign in 1983, the effort was met with a public outcry, as it had become a well-known landmark. The Boston Landmark Commission ordered the removal to be halted while the fate of the sign was debated. Citgo refurbished the sign, and it had remained in place ever since. In 2016, the Landmarks Commission gave the sign temporary landmark status, and in November 2018 it voted unanimously to give the sign office status as a Boston Landmark, however, this was vetoed by mayor Marty Walsh. The owner of the building -- 660 Beacon Street -- the sign in located on, Related Beal, entered into a deal with Citgo for the sign to remain in place for 30 years. As of 2019, the sign is not protected by landmark status.
