First Anglo-Ashanti War (1823 - 1826)

  • commencement: 1823 with the ferry of an Ashanti army across the Prah river and whose invasion in the Denkyira and Wassaw territories

Second Anglo-Ashanti War (1863 - 1864)

  • end of the clashes: 1864, retreat of the British after the outbreak of a smallpox epidemic under the British and after mass protests against the British in the coastal regions

Third Anglo-Ashanti War (1869 - 1874)

  • commencement: February 1869 with the start of an Ashanti campaign in direction to the coast as relief for the Dutches in Elmina
  • end of the clashes: begin of February 1874 after the bombardement of Elmina and the occupation of the Ashanti capital Kumasi by British troups on the 4th of February, 1874
  • official peace treaty: Treaty to Fomena on the 13th of February, 1874
  • results: destoolment of the Asantehene on the 26th of October, 1874; building of a British fort in Kumasi; installation of a permanent "Resident" as permanent representative of the British government in Asante

Fourth Anglo-Ashanti War (1895 - 1896)

  • commencement: The war started in the December 1895 on the pretext of failure to pay the fines levied on the Ashanti monarch by the Treaty of Fomena after the 1874 war.
  • end: occupation of the Ashanti capital Kumasi by British troups on the 17th of January, 1896; capture of the Asantehene and any important Ashanti leaders and subsequent banishment to the Seychelles; continuation of anti-British hostilities in the underground
  • results: The Kingdom of Ashanti was declared as dissolved and whose territory integrated as new protectorate in the British Colonial Empire on the 16th August 1896.

Fifth Anglo-Ashanti War (1900) (also called: The War of the Golden Stool)

  • commencement: Declaration of War of the Ashantis on the British on the 31st of March, 1900 after the British demanding of the delivery of the Golden Stool of Asante on the 28th of March, 1900
  • end: The British campaign failed. The British could never take possession of the Golden Stool.
  • results: The protectorates of Asante and of the Northern Territories are declared to the possession of the British Crown on the 26th of September, 1900.
