This painting was long known as the Allegory of Alfonso d'Avalos, but is now thought to have no connection to the Italian general (whose portraits by Titian are in the Prado and the Getty museum). The Allegory was in the collection of Charles I of England, and there are three 17th-century copies in the British Royal Collection, and others elsewhere.
