The Montmartre Abbey (L'abbaye royale de Montmartre) was a Benedectine Abbey of nuns founded in 1133 by king Louis VI on the top of the hill of Montmartre in Paris. During the Ancien Régime the abbey became one of the wealthiest, richest and powerful nunneries of France. It was eventually closed in 1790 during the French Revolution. In 1794 the last abbess was guiliottined and the abbey was literally razed to the ground. Today all that remains of the abbey is the Church of Saint-Pierre de Montmartre.
