English: This caricature, attributed to Erhard Schön (c. 1491-1542), shows a fat monk used as bagpipe by the devil. It is not a Catholic denunciation of Martin Luther (as often asserted in popular literature), but a Lutheran denunciation of monasticism. There are several contemporaneous editions with texts, all of them explaining the monk as a representation of hypocritical popery inspired by the devil.
