Five and Ten stores (also known as Five and Dime; Nickle or Dime, Ten-Cent or Dime Stores) were early forms of what are now called Variety Stores. They sold a wide assortment of inexpensive items for personal and household use.

Allentown had numerous 5 & 10 Cent Stores during the late 19th and 20th Centuries, the earliest being the F. W. Woolworth and Company in 1888. The last being the G.J. Spillane 5 & 10 Cent Store in 1998. Most of these stores had a large store on Hamilton Street in the Downtown Central Business District, while others occupied small, corner stores in the neighborhoods of the Old Allentown area. A list of these stores follows with their dates of existence:

  • F. W. Woolworth and Company (1888-1993).
  • J. G. McCrory (1908-1994)
  • F & W Grand-Silver (1915-1959); Later became H. L. Green (1959-1977)
  • S. S. Kresge Company (1917-1957)
  • Central Five and Ten (1934-1945)
  • G.J. Spillane (1949-1998) - Neighborhood stores only

           Ridge Avenue & Tilghman Streets (1949-1998)
           Eighth & Gordon Streets (1950-1998)
           Sixth & Turner Streets (1954-1998)

  • Ben Franklin (1960-1996) - 15th Street Shopping Center only
