The 2023 Armadale and Thornlie Line shutdown commenced on 20 November 2023, with works expected to be complete in the middle of 2025. It consists of station upgrades, station replacements (Carlisle, Oats Street, Queens Park, Cannington and Beckenham), the permanent closure of Welshpool railway station, and removal of level crossings at Mint Street, Oats Street, Welshpool Road, Hamilton Street, Wharf Street and William Street. The Thornlie line shares this section of the line but the branch line does not have any level crossings as of 2023. The Thornlie line, on reopening in 2025, will connect to Cockburn railway station on the Mandurah Line. Additional extension of the Armadale line to Byford, will see additional level crossings either rebuilt or closed including Forrest Road, Church Avenue and Larsen Road, along with a new station at Byford.
