The Afghan Border Police (ABP) is responsible for protecting and controlling Afghanistan's international borders as well as all international airports in the country. It is part of the Afghan National Police force which is under the Ministry of Interior. The ABP is trained and maintained by the United States and other NATO nations, and is divided into six regional units covering the whole of the country.

In December 2017, most of the Afghan Border Police personnel of the Afghan National Police were transferred to the Afghan National Army to form the Afghan Border Force (ABF). The ABF was responsible for security of Afghanistan's border area. The remaining ABP personnel maintained responsibility for customs operations at border crossings and airports.
