Pay attention to licensing
|
Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.
File:MargaretEngland.jpg seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file. If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file discussion page.

File:Frederick I Legnica.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

License problems
Hi, Revi, as you know very well I've been blocked from editing (since you blocked me). May I ask you for help? I just don't want to be blocked again, and I would like to know something to help me when I get free from this blocking. Ok, here's the question: I've read the page of licensing and it says that are some webpages with free licensing whose images can be uploaded to Commons. How can I distinguish those websites? There's some sign in the webpage itself? Where? As you may know I don't do what I do with purpose, I just get so anxious to contribute that I may ignore sometimes the licending problem. So, can you tell me how I distinguish free-licensed websites? If you helped me, I would prevent myself from being blocked again.
Greetings,
( User:Mhmrodrigues ), 20:34, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

- Wikipedia cannot be source of itself. Please, don't remove templates from the pages: let admins to deal with such cases. In any case, the file has been deleted from itwiki for the same reasons. --Ruthven (msg) 12:19, 11 October 2016 (UTC)

- Actually maybe you didn't know at the time, but you uploaded several images from itwiki that were from a vandal (no copyright, no source, invented places and persons), that are being deleted now. Thanks for the comprehension --Ruthven (msg) 06:20, 12 October 2016 (UTC)

Thank you Mhmrodrigues for the images you upload. The category:Paintings by Antoni Boys in the Kunsthistorisches Museum is a real gem! Thank you very much. Lotje (int:Talkpagelinktext) 15:14, 25 November 2016 (UTC) |

Please revert massive coin category changes
Dear Mhmrodrigues, I am appalled by the changes you have carried out in the categories of coins issued by medieval Spanish kings, such as Category:Coins of Alphonse X of Castile. Please ask for others' opinions and try to reach a consensus before carrying out such massive changes.
At least for Spanish coins, we have been using two different types of categories that should not be confused:
- Category:Coins of KING/QUEEN of KINGDOM, which is applied to coins issued by a certain kingdom or state under the reign of a certain monarch. These categories are subcategories of Category:Coins of KINGDOM.
- Category:KING/QUEEN of KINGDOM on coins, only for coins that actually show the effigy of the monarch. These categories are subcategories of Category:Coins by motif.
Both categories can exist for some monarchs, for example Category:Coins of Isabella II of Spain and Category:Isabella II of Spain on coins.
The category you have created, Category:Alfonso X of Castile in coins, contains absolutely no effigy of that monarch, so the user who looks for images of Alfonso X in that category is going to be disappointed. I ask you to please revert your changes and, if you want to introduce changes in the category tree, please start a discussion for it.
Best regards, --Hispalois (int:Talkpagelinktext) 16:45, 28 November 2016 (UTC)
- Sorry, I disagree with your two arguments. You say "you never know what is going to enter in that category. How can you guess that there's no coin with an effigy of the king?" Categories should not be created in case one day they become necessary. If one day we upload a coin with the effigy of Alfonso X, then the category you have created will become useful; right now, it is not, and all the coins currently in it, which do not contain any image of Alfonso X, should be moved back to Category:Coins of Alphonse X of Castile. Regarding your statement that one of the names of the category is easier to find than the other, I find it purely subjective.
- Furthermore, if you check Category:Coins of France, Category:Coins of England, Category:Coins of the Papal States or Category:Coins of the Holy Roman Empire you will see that they apply the naming convention Category:Coins of KING/QUEEN of KINGDOM; whereas Category:Coins of Great Britain, Category:Coins of Belgium or Category:Coins of the Netherlands prefer Category:KING/QUEEN of KINGDOM on coins. A project-wide harmonization should be carried out, and I would suggest applying to every country the convention we have developed for Spanish coins, as explained above. But for such a change, one needs to make the proposal, await comments from other users and reach a consensus. One cannot unilaterally change the name of two or three categories at random.
- So, I ask you again to please revert your changes and then, if you like, take your proposal of changes to the Village Pump for discussion. --Hispalois (int:Talkpagelinktext) 07:55, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
- For more clarity, I have added in the explanation above two sentences that indicate that the two types of categories discussed ("Coins of KING" and "KING on coins") are located at rather different parts in the overall category tree. --Hispalois (int:Talkpagelinktext) 18:53, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for the recent changes. I like the name you propose, "Category: (a king)'s effigies in coins", as it is more explicit than "Category: (a king) on coins". It would be great to rename all categories of monarchs on coins along those lines, but for that I definitely encourage you to seek a more general consensus beforehand.
- On the other hand, I am afraid that your proposal to make those categories a sub-category of "Category:Coins of (a king)" is not going to work because it would go against the principle of "Don't place an item into a category and its parent" stated in the Commons:Categories guideline. In my opinion, "Category: (a king)'s effigies in coins" should be a sub-category of "Category: (a king) in art", and also of "Category:Kings on coins" or "Category:Queens on coins". (And there may be coins that show an ancient monarch and have been issued by a later king, for example this one. Cheers --Hispalois (int:Talkpagelinktext) 21:01, 1 December 2016 (UTC)
