Summary[edit]

Description
English: Lisbon in the aftermath of the 1755 earthquake, showing persons being hanged in the presence of priests and military officials. One priest is holding a crucifix, one possibly a prayer book, so they could be giving last rites to the persons being hanged (General crime and mayhem occurs nearby).

In his ?The Lisbon Earthquake in 1755: The First Modern Disaster,? University of Delaware Disaster Research Center, Dept. of Sociology and Criminal Justice, 2003, Russell R. Dynes states: ?Security became an issue. It is reported that gallows were set up in several parts of the city as a warning against looting. It was also noted that at least 34 were executed for looting?." Others executed were murderers and arsonists.
