This image has been DOCTORED.

If you look closely you can see smudges on every second graduation of the inner ring. Clearly this is a car with both MPH and KPH on its speedo (common in the UK), and the MPH numbers have been removed. This is the photo of the dashboard of a car doing 140kph.

I was alerted by the fact that no car I know of does 140MPH at under 4000RPM. Also, no car I know of has a speedo with graduations "0 - 20 - 40 - 80 - 120 - 140 - 160" !!

Further, this image is exceptionally clear, one would expect motion blur from a background that ought to be zipping by at 200fps. The background is blurred but it isn't a motion blur. One would also expect jitters as the driver held a camera to his chest with one hand while handling a car doing 140MPH with his other hand. Also, the edges of the top bar of the steering wheel look unnaturally sharp compared to the window shot. If he had a short range focus then the dash would be sharp too, and if he had a long range focus the steering wheel would be blurred.

If the photo is real then this is also an almost SUICIDAL manoeuvre. That is a SHARP corner only about 80m away, which is about 1.3 seconds at 140mph. The guy would have to be undergoing HEAVY braking while taking this photo, if he doesn't want to get himself killed.

I conjecture that the driver took a photo while his car was stopped. Then he took a photo of his dash doing 140kph (judging by the tacho, his beater probably can't even get up to 140MPH). Then he photoshopped in the dash photo, replacing the original steering wheel arm over the top of it.

  • You are quite right that the photo has been doctored, but you are not correct in the exact methods. The photo was taken at 100mph (it would be suicidal to stop on a motorway, even a quiet one) and photoshop used to replace 60 with 80, 80 with 120, 100 with 140 and 120 with 160. Good guess! --138.37.246.12 17:05, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • No, that's not a sharp corner, also for the record it was taken on the M49 (the link between the M5 and the new river Severn bridge coming from the South West). The photo was taken with a flash (to illuminate the dash), but with a short exposure (cant remember what, probaly 1/500 range) as it was a sunny day.
