A doubt[edit]

@AFBorchert: Sir! I have a doubt! Are images of such type ok? I mean this is jpg and not svg. Is this still ok? If not, can we change it to svg? Another thing, how to make a new file as svg instead of jpg (which is normally put as suffix by the Commons when I upload it)? Haoreima (talk) 13:38, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Haoreima, it is permitted but we would prefer at least PNG format and preferably SVG. JPG is good for photographs but can generate unnecessary artifacts in case of diagrams and text. SVG of texts can be easily generated with the help of Inkscape. Example:
How was it done? I generated a PDF file with this text (and nothing else). Then I converted it to SVG using the command line
inkscape --export-area-drawing --export-filename=testit.svg testit.pdf

@AFBorchert: Sir! I think I couldn't use ways other than upload wizard as I am a mobile phone user, if I ain't wrong. I don't know whether the "Inkscape" will be suitable for mobile phone or not. Could you please teach me according to mobile phone usage? And yes, I uploaded that file, and while uploading, it automatically converts itself into jpg, adding a suffix ".jpg" (Which I don't directly added)! It's preferable if you teach me based on upload wizard. Haoreima (talk) 01:07, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Haoreima, the options on a mobile phone are quite limited. As I understand it, the upload wizard adds the suffix according to the format of the uploaded file, i.e. if you upload a JPEG file, a “.jpg” suffix will be added. The wizard would not convert a PNG file to a JPEG file during uploading. I do not know which operating system is running on your mobile phone and how you captured this image. If it is a screenshot using Android, you should look for Screenshot format in your options, see [1]. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 07:22, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@AFBorchert: Another very important doubt, I saw this page lacks metadata. Is it still ok? Else, how shall I put it? Haoreima (talk) 07:25, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Haoreima, please do not worry about this. Metadata are generated and relevant for photographs but not for screenshots. Whether metadata are generated or not depends on the tool generating such a file. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 07:30, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@AFBorchert: I am much concerning on this topic because I am to create hundreds of files on this type. My last question, is this very file (at its content of information) satisfy everything for its existence? I mean I don't want other editors to nominate it for RfD! I want being assured of this, Sir! Haoreima (talk) 07:34, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Haoreima, I suggest following points:
  • You should at least try to generate PNGs instead of JPEGs.
  • Files that depict just some typefaces are ineligible for copyright. You should use {{PD-text}} instead of a Creative Commons license like {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}.
  • You should name the font and possibly the tools you were using to generate that file. The {{Own using}} template can be helpful here.

@AFBorchert: Sir! Truly speaking, I don't install any special keyboard. Mobile phones made in India automatically support Meitei script. I use that. My phone is "Redmi". Another thing is that I used a screenshot of a plain white screen, and later used it as a background for typing the words in Meitei script (which I like to write). Is this eligible? Your suggestion no. 2 is ok for me, but the no. 3 is a bit complicated for me! Is there any alternative way? Haoreima (talk) 07:50, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@AFBorchert: Like this one:
@Haoreima: I am not talking about a keyboard but a font. Both are independent from each other. BTW, before you upload hundreds of files it could be advisable to present your project at COM:GVP and ask for more input. --AFBorchert (talk) 09:24, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Haoreima: I wonder in particular why you need diagrams like File:LEIMALEL.jpg for typefaces in articles like mni:ꯂꯩꯃꯂꯦꯜ ꯁꯤꯇꯄꯤ. If you want to display the text in a larger font size you can achieve this by using CSS attributes. Example:
<span style="font-size:128px">ꯂꯩꯃꯂꯦꯜ</span>
delivers this:ꯂꯩꯃꯂꯦꯜ
--AFBorchert (talk) 09:35, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Haoreima: You should keep following in mind: Typefaces as diagrams are useful if you want to show how a particular font looks like or to show typefaces where the reader has possibly no local fonts that support that script. The former is useful only if you document exactly which font has been used and the latter is not relevant for mni:wp as you are using that script throughout the project. If you are using such diagrams without necessity, you are creating accessibility problems for people who have visual impairments. Hence, I do not see yet a compelling reason to upload hundreds of such images. --AFBorchert (talk) 09:44, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@AFBorchert: I have a plan to use these in all the pages, not only in Meitei wikipedia article, but also in English too. My intention is like this:
To my opinion, these are not unnecessary. Sanamahism doesn't promote idolatry of deities (though some people started doing so in modern era), so, written names of gods and goddesses are highly promoted. Like in the page Allah, that Arabic transliteration for "Allah" is put, I want to add Meitei transliterations for all the deities in Meitei religion (Sanamahism) related articles. So, will my work be eligible for existence here? Haoreima (talk) 11:52, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@AFBorchert: Sir! Regarding font, I don't know what should I write! I saw you wrote Noto Sans Meetei Mayek! Shall I write like that? Haoreima (talk) 11:56, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Haoreima: First of all, so far you are using just regular type faces but not calligraphy. File:Allah3.svg is a callygraphic work – this is no regular type face. Hence, you cannot compare this to the files you are uploading. Secondly, this is not aboud idolatry. You are, of course, free to present their names in prominent form in a larger scale. However, you do not need to upload images for this as this can be done with regular Mediawiki markup as demonstrated above. --AFBorchert (talk) 12:55, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@AFBorchert: Sir! Atleast I think like this:
. I have great interest in making such files, because of 2 reasons, first, most people can't see Meetei characters, second, there's little or almost no files for most Meitei gods and goddesses! In Islam, the names of prophets and their succeeding religious leaders, as well as Chinese Japanese characters are available here. Like theirs, I want to do so! Haoreima (talk) 13:01, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Haoreima: But you do not need this at mni:wp as this can also be achieved through regular Mediawiki markup as demonstrated. This Wikipedia project will not be read by anyone who is not able to see Meetei glyphs. Using regular markup will also make sure that all readers with visual impairments are able to read it – even if they are blind. Otherwise great care has to be taken to assure accessbility. In other projects you should follow established practice as in Leimarel Sidabi at en:wp where Meitei script is provided. --AFBorchert (talk) 14:12, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@AFBorchert: Truly speaking, it's by luck that Meitei script are spared in English language articles. There's WP:INDIC according to which many editors tried to remove Indian scripts from the English language articles. And such editors will surely remove those Meitei letters, one day, when they find it out. So, putting a file (like this very one) is very much needed for Meitei mythology and Meitei religion articles! Haoreima (talk) 14:16, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Haoreima: I do not agree with this. --AFBorchert (talk) 14:23, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@AFBorchert: Yes Sir! WP:INDIC is not properly followed by editors. Some spare for Sanskrit, Hindi, Bengali but when it's for the case of Meitei, they immediately removed it whenever they found. I was told by some admins not to do that again 6 months ago. So, getting feared of being blocked for not obeying WP:INDIC, for the last 6 months, I never add Meitei script in any Simple English wikipedia articles in lead or in infobox.
