I just wanted to note that the left side of the painting, not visible in this small bit, shows a group of physicians observing (this is a demonstration or class) and, on the back wall, is a picture of a woman in a state of "hysteria". Thus, as Sulloway argues in Freud, Biologist of the Mind, the painting "captures an important flaw in Charcot's technique: his verbal commentary and the picture on the wall have already suggested to the patient the 'crisis' she is beginning to undergo." --Fastfission 19:47, 23 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
