This diagram was created in Inkscape 0.48, using real text entities, Times New Roman font. It was tested with various viewers and Web browsers, and I immediately discovered that none of the programs I tried were able to display superscripts or subscripts correctly, so the likelihood of Wikimedia Commons being able to display the image correctly were nil. To get around the problem, all the text entities were replicated on another drawing layer and converted to paths, with the unfortunate result of significantly increasing the file size. However, since the original text entities are now preserved on a hidden layer, if this diagram should be translated into other languages, it is easy to do so by editing the text layer, duplicating the layer, and converting the text entities on the duplicate layer to paths to replace the English text in the prototype. — Quicksilver@ 06:02, 15 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I re-examined the problem of displaying superscripts and subscripts and devised a better solution that keeps the file size small. Strings that contained superscripts and subscripts were modified to leave a space for each such element, then short text bits at 65% scale were positioned in those spaces. I used a copy of the original text as a template for positioning the composite text, as kerning was necessary to move the characters around to match the original spacing in Inkscape. Constructing the image is a bit more tedious this way, but it displays correctly when viewed with a variety of viewers, and the Wikimedia Commons rendering engine produces the correct result, too. — Quicksilver@ 03:52, 1 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
