We categorize files or objects? And if the file is a detaile? I think we categorize files. Vuvueffino (talk) 12:25, 15 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, some categories are related to the image (say "black background"), others to the object it depicts ("16th-century paintings"). When the object has its own categories, categories related to the object should not appear on the file (File:Girolamo Dai Libri - Madonna della quercia - 1533 after - Museo Castelvecchio, Verona (ITALY), detail Saint Peter.jpg should not be directly categorized in Category:Renaissance paintings in Verona because it is already in Category:Madonna della quercia by Girolamo dai Libri, Museo Castelvecchio, that in turn is already categorized. Now, the category system is very far from ideal, and there are some edge cases. Logically, the detail should not be categorized in Category:Saint Peter's keys because the parent is already categorized there, but since it is really a detail with Saint Peter, this one may be admissible. --Zolo (talk) 17:03, 15 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
