Version without blue diamond on last star[edit]

The original version of this file omits the blue diamond around the star in the green section in the fly. This is clearly a mistake - the uploader stating they were basing the illustration on [the photo of the original flag](https://www.tampa.gov/sites/default/files/content/images/migrated/city-of-tampa-flag.gif) (which had an old, no longer used, version of the seal, and an obvious colour difference between the main part of the yellow stripe and its edges which the uploader has preserved in the illustration). That original flag clearly includes the blue diamond, as do the NAVA article illustrations/descriptions of the flag used in the early 2000s (the main differences being the seal, and the treatment of the edging as an artefact of manufacture of that particular physical flag, rather than part of the design).

It's pretty clear that the diamond was not omitted on the basis of flags existing at that time without it. However, Wikipedia being what it is, this incorrect illustration has been used in any number of articles about/campaigns against the flag, stock imagery, and merchandise based on stock images, even actual flags for sale. I'm all for representing flags as that are actually used, not just as codified or based on an original specimen - if indeed this mistake had supplanted the standard version of the flag then we should acknowledge that.

But that's not the case - some quick searches for flags actually being used in the city all show the flags similar to the variant reported in Raven:

Often people on Wikimedia projects argue for giving priority to codified or officially used versions of flags. Personally, I'd say there are times when it's worth paying more attention to other commonly used versions. In this case, however, the City itself is responsible for most of the public use of this flag, and I'd certainly say that public use of the flag in the area should be more relevant to our illustration than campaigns for a new flag, stock images, or even a few people with flags on their bedroom wall. In that context, it's simply not true to say that the blue square version "is not generally used". JPD (talk) 01:14, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
