Identification[edit]

This is an Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis).

Western gray squirrels do not have a black phenotype, only the Eastern Gray squirrel. Eastern gray squirrels are a very common introduced species in the Pacific Northwest (Merilees, W. (1986) Eastern Grey squirrels around Greater Vancouver. Discovery 15 (1): 17-19) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.92.152.216 (talk • contribs) 21 January 2012 (UTC)

What characteristics identify this as an w:American Red Squirrel and not a w:Western Gray Squirrel? The ARS is much redder and has ear "tufts", while the WGS is a similar gray and lacks ear tufts. By comparison, the w:Douglas Squirrel also has different coloration and ear tufts. The photograph was taken on the border of w:Chelan County, Washington and w:Okanogan County, Washington, which is within the range for all three species. [1] I am not an expert on squirrel identification, but I'm not convinced this is an ARS. -- BlueCanoe (talk) 01:04, 18 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
