Wrong name?[edit]

This painting seems not to be the same as the more famous painting of apparently the same name, which appears on the Durer page. Perhaps some effort at differentiating the two from each other more clearly would be beneficial. ```` — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rtelkin (talk • contribs) 04:05, 4 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Salvator Mundi[edit]

The Salvator Mundi (Saviour of the World) concept, is Christ depicted with his right hand raised in blessing and his left hand holding an orb/Globe. I don't see this here. Where is the confirmation that this is indeed a Salvator Mundi? This is mis-named and in the wrong category surely--BeckenhamBear (talk) 16:01, 18 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Durer?[edit]

I can find nothing to substantiate that this is by Durer. Can anyone? --BeckenhamBear (talk) 16:23, 18 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

a few short notes[edit]

  • There are people who assume that it is Dürer's last work and he wasn't able to complete it, so another hand tried to do so.
  • Obviously it isn't a 'Salvator mundi', this title might have come up erroneously by confusion on lists of Dürer's works.
  • There are three "stages" of this painting: 1st - the right hand holds a chalice (can still be seen, have a closer look). 2nd - the chalice has been removed poorly by an unknown painter. 3rd - into the now empty hand a cross was given, which has been removed later because that has for sure not been genuine.
  • Who is depicted? Pro Christ: the chalice, contra Christ: he doesn't have a beard as it has been usual painting practice at Dürer's time. Because of the cross (see this image for example) it was for some time erroneously assumed to be Saint Philip.--Achim (talk) 15:48, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed, this (right) is the (a) genuine Salvator Mundi that our file gets confused with on the internet.
Albrecht dürer. salvator mundi, 1505 ca.
The main Wikipedia article is confused too (about these two pictures), it also needs to be sorted out. I nominated our picture to be re-named as to File:Albrecht Dürer - unknown.jpg. See https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Albrecht_dürer_salvator_mundi.JPG This was on the basis of you finding a reference to it here: https://www.albrecht-durer.org/Unknown-9.html which advises it's title as "Unknown", Actually as an aside I think the experts might be wrong, I doubt our unknown is a Durer at all, just a very poor follower, only a massive and expensive successful restoration would convince me otherwise, but then who am I to say. --BeckenhamBear (talk) 13:05, 23 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
