About Kanem Empire[edit]

Compared to this map Kanem Empire appears too small. Can someone verify which, if any, is correct?. -- 10:25, 13 March 2008 User:Hakeem.gadi

The map on p. 221 of the Volume I of The Anchor Atlas of World History agrees with this image more than with Image:Afrika-Kanem-Bornu.png. The difference between the northern boundaries of the Kanem-Bornu area on the two maps is not much of a problem, considering that that territory is actually in the Sahara desert... size is a difficult one, because sizes, and aligences changes over the years. I tried to use the size and shape that matched the most sources. ZyMOS (talk) 21:13, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I can see a lot of effort went into this map, but unfortunately, it apperars to be based on a rather disparate and dodgy collection of sources. Wouldn't it be better to try and find a historical atlas that can actually be cited as a source? I am sure the prehistory of Africa has been adequately discussed in quotable literature. As it stands, it will be very difficult to use the map anywhere on Wikipedia. 130.60.142.37 18:43, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree many sources are dodgy. This is because, sadly, it is extreamly hard to sources on the subject, let alown, reliable ones. But most are ffrom faily reliable sources. Musames, universities, etc. The rests are from sites which have semi-detailed descriptions of african history. but yes a few/many aren't great. Thats why i try to find 3 sources that agree. Only when there are reliable sources, i used less than 3. As you can see i didn't put half the emipires in my list on the map because i couldn't find enough reliable sources, which matched. Until sources are found i won't add them. And i spent months reaserching this soly for making this map, for wikimedia sites. None the less, i think then are acceptable for wikipedia. They are problable better sources that an average wikipedia entry. And i tried to reaserch it as best i can. Saying all that, if anyone finds errors, please correct or delete the empire. it is an SVG, and i made everything on seperate layers, well documented. so it can be edited with little effort. I hope that this is acceptable. ZyMOS (talk) 21:13, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

the time period is too long[edit]

the period from 500 BC to 1500 AD is too much time to be shown on one map thats 2 thousand years. id rather see two political maps of African continent for this period. one map for 500 BC to 1000 AD then 1000 AD to 1500 AD. the western portion of Africa has too much activity in this period and too much civilization overlaping. i understand there was no Pan-Nigerian civilization they were a culture of small states and you can immigine how many states exsisted in this one nation for 2,000 years.for instance Kano city was independent and it was once one of the Hausa states. 99.51.212.6 18:49, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

However, our political knowledge of the area during this period (as opposed to archaeological cultures) is often quite slim... AnonMoos (talk) 18:51, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Horn of Africa[edit]

'Christian Ethiopia' never located in modern day Somaliland. The historical Empire of Ethiopia was only concentrated in the Western part of modern day Ethiopia (south of Aksum and later absorbed Aksum to its empire). Actually where Christian Ethiopia is located in the map, is part of the Adal Sultanate. And to give you more info; the Somali Ajuuraan Empire was located in the Southern part of modern day Somalia and controlled Eastern Ogaden. The area around Mogadishu was part of the Sultanate of Mogadishu (wich was an vassal of the Ajuuraan realm). I hope this will help. Regards.Runehelmet (talk) 21:01, 29 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Roman Empire[edit]

Great map, but is there a reason the Roman Empire isn't included? See, for example, File:Roman_Empire_Trajan_117AD.png. Although it was not African in origin, neither was the Persian Empire nor were, arguably, the Arab caliphates. Also, there's a typo in the legend: "Persiam" should be "Persian". Meroe/Kush[edit]

Why is the kingdom of Kush and the later kingdom of Meroe ignored? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2A02:C7F:8A1C:8A00:912C:9CC4:5548:3A90 (talk) 14:33, 10 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
