WRECK OF THE REINA MERCEDES. The Reina Mercedes was an old Spanish battleship which, althoughit mounted many heavy guns, was not able to accompany Cerveras fleetwhen it made its dash from Santiago harbor on July 3, 1898, only to bedestroyed by the American fleet lying in wait for it. When the victoriousAmerican vessels entered Santiago harbor some days after the battle, theMercedes opened fire upon them, but soon was sunk. The Spanish ves-sel was later raised, and was utilized as a United States floating barracks.
