Summary[edit]

Description
English: Williamsville United Methodist Church, 5681 Main Street at Oakgrove Drive, Williamsville, New York, November 2022. Though much of what's seen in this photograph represents the numerous additions and renovations that have occurred to it over the years, the core of the building seen here is a wood-framed structure built in 1844 many of whose Greek Revival architectural details are still evident: the shallow-pitched front-gabled roof styled into a Classical pediment (tucked today behind a mid-20th century brick-faced addition) and the Doric pilasters that frame each side of the façade are each textbook features of the style. The tower, meanwhile, as well as other newer elements add a not unharmonious touch of the Colonial Revival. Echoing the age of the building is the age of the congregation: strictly speaking, it was founded in 1821, yet its history can be traced back even further to the first religious services held by non-Amerindians within what's now Amherst's town limits, beginning no later than 1807 at the latest and helmed by itinerant "circuit riders" including the famed Rev. Dr. Glezen Fillmore, a cousin of future U.S. President Millard Fillmore and the first Methodist preacher west of the Genesee River.
