Text[edit]

Stanley Hanson, 61, Dies. White Friend of Seminoles. W. Stanley Hanson, 61-year-old Lee county pioneer and "white medicine man" to the Seminole Indiana, died at 3:30 o'clock yesterday morning at Lee Memorial hospital following an illness of three months. Mr. Hanson was stricken in January and was carried to the hospital a few days ago after taking a turn for the worse. By a strange coincidence his death came just 22 years after a group of Fort Myers and other Florida West Coast leaders of which Mr. Hanson was a prominent member began a trek through the Everglades to Miami to prepare the way for the Tamiami Trail. At 7 a. m. on April 4, 1923, the Trail blazers left Fort Myers on the first leg of the trip to Miami. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Clara Hanson; a son, W. Stanley Hanson, MM 1-c in the navy who is serving In the Philippines; and a daughter, Mrs. Marian Mc-Gee, who lives at the Hanson home on Monroe street. Funeral services will be held at 4 o'clock this afternoon at the Lawrence A. Powell chapel on First street. The Rev. Frank G. Ireland, rector of St. Luke's Episcopal church, of which Mr. Hanson was a member, will be in charge. Pallbearers will be Ed Simpson, Fletcher Forehand, Tom Derington, Fred Lowdermilk, Bub Dupree and D. T. Farabee. Interment will be in Fort Myers cemetery. Mr. Hanson was brought to Fort Myers soon after his birth by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. William Hanson from Key West. Dr. Hanson was a prominent physician here for a number of years while his wife was active in civic work until she died in November, 1934. Dr. Hanson died in 1911. Mr. Hanson attended Fort Myers schools and his early jobs included work at the local post office and the Royal Palm hotel, which at that time was one of the best known resort hotels in Florida. Later he was city tax collector, a member of the city council and held other the Fort Myers offices. He was a member of the county commission when the bridge was built from the mainland to Fort Myers Beach. In 1912 he married the former Miss Clara Petzold of Tarpon Springs. He was probably best known for his work with the Seminole Indians by whom he was trusted implicitly. At one time, Mr. Hanson had charge of the Big Cypress Indian reservation and was treated as a member of the tribe by the Seminoles. His Indian friends always found a camping place on his property while in Fort Myers. Many of them visited him during his last illness. Mr. Hanson spoke several Indian dialects and attended all the festivals and powwows of the Seminoles. He was an authority on the history of the early Caloosas as well as the Seminoles and on Fort Myers and Lee county, A great nature lover, Mr. Hanson was thoroughly familiar with the Everglades and acted as guide for winter visitors and others on trips into the Florida wilds.
