Summary[edit]

Description
English: Watercolor, bodycolor, and gum arabic on paper, with scratching out

28 1/4 X 20 1/4 in., 72 X 51.5 cm. Signed, l.l., W. HUNT

This is one of about a dozen large (approximately 20 X 30 inches) watercolors painted by William Henry Hunt in the late 1830s. It was originally exhibited under the title, Juvenile Palmistry, but later became known as The Fortune Teller or The Fortune Tellers. The model for the figure of a gullible boy was John Swain from Hastings, England. He wears the same studio prop hat as also depicted in Reading the League, which was painted a few years later by Hunt. The seated girl in this picture wears a yellow hat which is shown in Hunt's The Eavesdropper, exhibited along with this picture, at the 1839 Spring Exhibition of the Society of Painters in Water-colours.
